Visitax – Tourism tax in the state of Quintana Roo

The Mexican state of Quintana Roo is home to some of the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico. When visiting Cancún, Playa del Carmen, the island of Cozumel and Tulum, for example, it is necessary to pay the state’s new tourism tax.

What is the Visitax?

Since April 2021, the Mexican state of Quintana Roo has already been levying a tourism tax to fund the revival of tourism in the Mexican Caribbean. This tax – called Visitax – is levied on all foreign visitors over the age of 4 when they travel to Quintana Roo and depart from Cancún. The tax must be paid by visitors regardless of whether they are on holiday or on business. It is due again for each individual entry and is valid for a maximum stay of 180 days.

Payment of the tourism tax

There are several ways to pay the Visitax of 224 Mexican pesos (about 11 USD). It is possible to pay the tax directly at the airport, but you should expect long waiting times. Alternatively, the tax can be paid online before or during your stay in Mexico on the official VISITAX website of the government with the extension “gob.mx”.

Checking the payment

There are no controls when leaving the country by land or from another state. Even at the airport in Cancún, the payment of Visitax may not be checked. Nevertheless, we strongly recommend the payment of the tourism tax, as travellers may be refused entry due to existing debts in Mexico if they stay in Mexico again.
