Sensation in Chichén Itza

Yucatán – Archaeologists have made a sensational discovery at the Mayan cult site of Chichén Itza. Experts have discovered artefacts, vessels and objects from pre-Columbian times that are over 1000 years old in a cave in the complex. This is located about two kilometres from the famous step pyramid, at a depth of 24 metres. Currently, the archaeologists have been able to explore around 460 metres of the cave complex. Excavation director Guillermo de Anda describes the find as a “scientific treasure”. However, access to the underground cave proved to be problematic. Due to the narrow and winding construction, the researchers had to crawl over the ground in some places. In addition, a poisonous snake initially blocked the access. The cave had already been discovered by local people over 50 years ago, but at that time it was no longer considered. Only now has it once again become the focus of research.
