Travel in Mexico in spring 2022

The gradual decline in the number of Corona cases makes travel increasingly attractive.

Furthermore, restrictions related to the Corona virus are made in Mexico based on an epidemiological risk traffic light, which is adjusted according to the level of infection. At the time of publication of this article, all states are rated green.

The traffic light consists of four levels:

  1. Red: Severe restrictions on public life, possibly curfew, closure of public places, consideration of hygiene measures.
  2. Orange: Easing of restrictions, no curfew, limited availability of various services, very limited access to public places, consideration of hygiene measures in place.
  3. Yellow: Limited visitor capacity to public places (open and closed), consideration of existing hygiene measures.
  4. Green: All activities are allowed again, taking into account existing hygiene measures.

Further guidance:

  • Security protocols on flights to Mexico vary by airline, please enquire accordingly.
  • Group restrictions may apply at archaeological sites and other activities.
  • For beaches, the following maximum capacities apply, provided the minimum distance is maintained:
    • red level – no use allowed
    • orange level – 50%
    • yellow level – 75%
    • green level – 100%.

Currently, there are still many covid cases in Mexico, but with a steady decrease in incidences; therefore, the following situation is still expected in the coming weeks:

  • Wearing face masks is mandatory on a regular basis (outdoors and indoors).
  • People should keep a distance of 1.5 to 2 metres away from the area
  • The use of antibacterial gel before entering certain places is mandatory
  • Time restrictions at tourist attractions and limitations on the number of visitors are occasionally possible
  • Implementation of the Native Trails hygiene concept on all group tours

Visitax – Tourism tax in the state of Quintana Roo

The Mexican state of Quintana Roo is home to some of the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico. When visiting Cancún, Playa del Carmen, the island of Cozumel and Tulum, for example, it is necessary to pay the state’s new tourism tax.

What is the Visitax?

Since April 2021, the Mexican state of Quintana Roo has already been levying a tourism tax to fund the revival of tourism in the Mexican Caribbean. This tax – called Visitax – is levied on all foreign visitors over the age of 4 when they travel to Quintana Roo and depart from Cancún. The tax must be paid by visitors regardless of whether they are on holiday or on business. It is due again for each individual entry and is valid for a maximum stay of 180 days.

Payment of the tourism tax

There are several ways to pay the Visitax of 224 Mexican pesos (about 11 USD). It is possible to pay the tax directly at the airport, but you should expect long waiting times. Alternatively, the tax can be paid online before or during your stay in Mexico on the official VISITAX website of the government with the extension “gob.mx”.

Checking the payment

There are no controls when leaving the country by land or from another state. Even at the airport in Cancún, the payment of Visitax may not be checked. Nevertheless, we strongly recommend the payment of the tourism tax, as travellers may be refused entry due to existing debts in Mexico if they stay in Mexico again.

Vuela Seguro

Due to the Corona pandemic, Mexico has also taken some measures to monitor the pandemic situation in order to minimise the risk of infection. To enter Mexico, travellers had to fill out the Vuela Seguro online before each flight. A QR code was created from the health questionnaire data, which had to be presented to the Mexican authorities on request.

Since 01 March 2022, the Vuela Seguro is no longer required for all travellers to Mexico. Travellers no longer need to fill in the online questionnaire – it is no longer possible to do so on the website provided for this purpose.

Current information on the Corona Pandemic in Mexico

The coronavirus (Covid-19) currently has the whole world holding its breath. Many countries are taking protective measures to minimize the effects on the population. Mexico also is working to keep the progress of infection rates within the country low in order to avoid overloading the health system. Cinemas, restaurants and public facilities have been closed in many cities. Meetings with more than 100 participants are prohibited. Classes in schools and universities have been stopped and the population has been encouraged to do their work via home-office. In a level-headed manner, Mexico is trying to contain the spread of the virus and protect its population. Already in 2009, the country was praised by the World Health Organization (WHO) for its prudent behaviour during the H1N1 pandemic (swine flu). It was not least the experience of this past crisis that made the country more aware of how to deal with the current situation. Nevertheless, it should be mentioned that too few tests for the coronavirus are carried out in Mexico, which means that no exact conclusions can be drawn from the current infection figures. For this reason, it is important to protect oneself and others in order to contain the spread of the virus. In addition to appropriate sneezing etiquette and regular hand washing, it is also important to maintain a certain safety distance to your fellow human beings. Especially the latter is demonstrated by “Susana Distancia” and her friend in the following picture. These characters were created to sensitize the Mexican population and to point out the measures that each individual should take.

Rincón de Guayabitos – Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit

Guayabitos is currently still a real insider tip on the international travel market, but for Mexicans it is already one of the most popular domestic destinations – especially for families. Located directly on the so-called “Riviera Nayarit”, Guayabitos not only captivates with its fine sandy beaches and the crystal clear water of the Pacific Ocean. The small town in the southwest of Mexico also has a lot to offer, both in terms of landscape and culture. By the way, the name of the town is derived from Guayabo, the guava tree. It is native to Guayabitos and was first discovered by the Spanish.

Green light for the “Tren Maya”

At the end of 2019, the final decision was made to build a 1,500 km long train line through southeastern Mexico. The “Tren Maya” will pass through the states of Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Chiapas, Campeche and thus, several Mayan sites. Construction is expected to begin as early as spring of 2020. The main objectives of the construction of the new train line are the promotion of the ecotourism and the fight against poverty in neglected regions. The train is expected to carry three to eight million passengers per year and create tens of thousands of jobs.

Sensation in Chichén Itza

Yucatán – Archaeologists have made a sensational discovery at the Mayan cult site of Chichén Itza. Experts have discovered artefacts, vessels and objects from pre-Columbian times that are over 1000 years old in a cave in the complex. This is located about two kilometres from the famous step pyramid, at a depth of 24 metres. Currently, the archaeologists have been able to explore around 460 metres of the cave complex. Excavation director Guillermo de Anda describes the find as a “scientific treasure”. However, access to the underground cave proved to be problematic. Due to the narrow and winding construction, the researchers had to crawl over the ground in some places. In addition, a poisonous snake initially blocked the access. The cave had already been discovered by local people over 50 years ago, but at that time it was no longer considered. Only now has it once again become the focus of research.

Mexico City – ‘World’s Top Cities to visit in 2020’

Mexico City – The Mexican metropole was chosen by Rough Guides as one of the top destinations for the travel year 2020. Especially the flourishing art and design movement, the hip and individual city districts, the extraordinary and experimental food scene and some of the best museums in the world would make Mexico City so worth seeing and unique, according to Rough Guides. We at Native Trails can only confirm this and warmly recommend a visit to this vibrant and diverse metropole in the heart of the country.
